I almost always suggest to my mommas that they try yoga out while they are pregnant.
And I almost always get a look of shock or brushed off.
But ladies, hear me out. I promise you don’t have to bending and contorting or balancing on your head! There’s so much more to yoga, and especially while you’re pregnant follow my favorite yogi mantra: “Find what feels good!” (Bonus points if you can name my favorite YouTube yogi who brought this phrase into my life! Seriously, go search it, she's awesome!)
Find what feels good – listen to your body, this will be another yoga lesson that will serve you well when it comes to labor and birth. This doesn’t mean sitting on the couch with another bowl of ice cream feels good, so do that (though there’s probably time for that after yoga!). It means use your muscles and stretch your limbs in ways that bring satisfaction not stress.
If ever there is a time for modifications in activity and exercise, pregnancy is that time! If you don’t already have yoga block, you can improvise and use another object such as a large book. You can fill in blankets and pillows to make restful poses even more restful.
Prenatal yoga classes are great as a well-informed instructor can help you target your specific complaints of pregnancy (and maybe even resolve some of them!), help you find modifications to suit your body and baby, and bring you into loving and supportive community with other mommas-to-be.
An in-person class is the gold standard, but if you can’t swing that, find a sunny spot in your house with a little floor space and pull up YouTube. A simple “prenatal yoga” search will pull up MANY options – check out a few until you find a video that you click with.
Any movement is better than no movement, so start with a small goal, smash it, and keep on going!
You’ve got this, momma! Happy Yoga-ing!
